The salary ledger
926What do L1 to L13 mean?
Levels describe the scope of a role, not its title. Titles are not standardised between employers, so scope is the thing two people at different companies can compare.

- A placement, service year or internship. Learning on the job.
- L2 Graduate Trainee / Entry / Junior

- Delivers defined work without close supervision.
- L4 Mid-Level / Intermediate
- Owns a piece of work end to end and is trusted with it.

Not every number is in use. The scale is the one the directory's figures were collected on, and the gaps are rungs no employer in it has reported.

These are individual published figures, not market averages. A role needs at least 8 comparable figures before we quote a range.

Then read the number.
A payslip and an anonymous submission make different claims. These labels tell you what you’re looking at.
